Abstract Many attempts have been made to apply equations of state for describing the thermodynamic properties and phase equilibrium of associated and hydrogen-bonding fluids. Pure alcohols and their aqueous solutions have a complex structure and unusual thermodynamic behaviour. Due to their high polarity water and alcohol are complicated liquids and are a challenge to study both experimentally and theoretically. In pure fluids, strong attractive interactions between like molecules result in the formation of molecular clusters that have considerable effect on the thermodynamic and structural properties of the species. Song, Mason and Ihm have derived a simple analytic equation of state for non-polar fluids. Jeffrey and Austin develop a new equation of state for water by applying the modifications required to the ISM equation of state. In this work it is shown that this equation of state is useful for hydrogen-bonding compounds like alcohols. We use this equation of state for water and alcohols and predict their PVT behavior with sufficient accuracy. We have tested the predicted equation of state against the experimental data for water and alcohols. The agreement with experiment is quite good.
