Abstract
In the present study, we apply a robust Incompressible Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics method improved by advanced second-order discretization in order to examine active micromixers equipped with a rotating or an oscillating stir-bar. Since it has a Lagrangian nature and it is based on particles, Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics is an appropriate and convenient method for the moving boundary and for one-way coupled fluid– solid interactions. However, this method has not been applied to simulate active micromixers. The present study thus introduces a convenient Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics method for modelling active micromixers. In addition, mixing flow is investigated by considering the vorticity field. Cross-shaped and straight stir-bars are also examined and evaluated. The presented results show that the cross-shaped stir-bar is more efficient than the straight stir-bar. In addition, the rotating cross-shaped stir-bar can be introduced as an appropriate stirrer, while the rotating straight stirbar demonstrates weak performance.
