Abstract

Air conditioners consume a lot of energy. Also, the performance of conventinol vapor compression systems is reduced in some situations due to water condensation. Membrane is considered as an efficient technology for air dehumidification process. A membrane based air dehumidification unit was studied for use in HVAC systems. The aim of this work is to investigate the effect of polymer type and feed pressure on the required membrane area for air dehumidification unit in an new air conditioning system. A mathematical model with cross flow configuration was used. The model was validated with data in the literature. The results showed that by selecting the polymers with high permeability and selectivity lower membrane area for air dehumidification could be achieved. Also, Increasing feed pressure from 1 to 4 bar can reduce the required PVC membrane area from 409.57 to 58.47 m2.
