Abstract

In this article, a new method for salt extraction and water salinity reduction based on plasma interaction with ionic solutions is presented. Plasma interaction with brine solution leads to salt extraction from the solution. The XRD analysis of extracted particles showed the presence of NaCl and MgCl2. Increasing the irradiation time increases the amount of salt extracted. The results showed that the arrangement of electrodes and the distance of the electrodes from the solution surface have a significant effect on the salt extraction rate, such that at certain electrode positions, the amount of extracted salt increases greatly. Furthermore, this method enables a substantial increase in the concentrations of nitrite and nitrate in water, while simultaneously reducing both the electrical conductivity (EC) and pH of the water. Consequently, the resulting solution holds potential for dual applications: as a nitrate-based fertilizer and as a pH-reducing agent for saline soils.
