Abstract

In this master thesis, the interceptor effect on a planing hull vessel is studied by numerical simulation. Resistance and sea keeping of the planing hull vessel is simulated in STARCCM+ at 0.5 Froud Number 1.6 and the results are compared with experimental data presented in [42]. Results show acceptable accuracy when compared with experimental data. The results presented in this thesis, can be used for future workings and also show that numerical simulation can predict the behavior of planing vessels with low costs and can save time but also it needs high levels of skill and experience. At first, the same projects were studied. Then, the C1 hull was modeled in SOLIDWORKS. After modeling the C1 hull, its performance was simulated with and without an interceptor in STARCCM+. Finally, the results were compared with the experimental data. Using an interceptor reduces resistance, especially in high-speed performance. • By increasing the speed to speeds higher than 3 m/s, pitch values decrease. At speeds below 3 m/s, by increasing the speed pitch value increases. • By using an interceptor, the pitch value decreases in comparison with the bare hull. • Generally, it can be stated that using an interceptor, decreases the heave value in comparison with the heave value of the bare hull.
