Abstract

Stepped-planing hull is the most favorite hull form of most designers in high speed craft market. Despite their widespread use globally, there is no general method for calculation of the resistance in calm water and motions in wave of stepped planing hulls. In this paper, numerical approach is utilized to study the hydrodynamics of stepped planing hull in calm water and wave. Reynolds Averaged Navier Stokes (RANS) equations and nonlinear free surface boundary conditions are discretized by overset grid finite volume scheme. VOF model is applied to capture the free surface between air and water. The total resistance of the planing hull in calm water and responses in vertical plane is validated against published experimental results which reveals acceptable precision. According to the results, the utilized numerical approach seems promising in hydrodynamic design of stepped planing hulls. Results show good agreement to published experimental data and VOF scheme combined by overset grid approach capture the free surface well.
