Abstract

Procrastination is an unnecessary delay in doing an activity that one ultimately intends to complete and accomplish. Academic procrastination, which is one of the most common types of procrastination and one of the common problems among students, has a negative effect on their academic performance. Therefore, the aim of the present study was to design a model of academic procrastination based on perfectionism, neuroticism and conscientiousness with the Moderation of self-efficacy and the mediation of fear of failure and progress goals. 400 male and female high school students of Khorrambid city were selected by random cluster sampling method and participated in this research. And to Frost's perfectionism questionnaire (1990), the short form of the Big Five personality questionnaire of Neo Costa and McCree (1992), the academic procrastination questionnaire of Solomon and Roth Bloom (1984), Conroy's fear of failure (2010) and achievement. They answered Christopher Vaz's goal questionnaire (2006) and Morris self-efficacy questionnaire (2002). The structural equation model method was used to analyze the data. The results showed that there is a significant direct relationship between perfectionism and the variable of fear of failure and progress goals, and between fear of failure and progress goals and academic procrastination. However, the relationship between neuroticism and conscientiousness with fear of failure and progress goals was not significant. Also, the investigation of indirect effects showed that there is a significant relationship between perfectionism, neuroticism and conscientiousness with academic procrastination with the mediation of fear of failure and progress goals. In general, according to the findings of the research, it can be concluded that to reduce academic procrastination in students, attention should be paid to their personality and motivational characteristics.
