Abstract

The purpose of the present study was the effectiveness of eye movement desensitization and reprocessing on sensitivity to appearance-based rejection, body shame, and self-compassion in people with body dysmorphic disorder. In terms of practical purpose and in terms of collecting experimental data, the current study was of the quasi-experimental type of single case A-B-A with a multiple baseline design and with one and three months follow-up. The statistical population of the present study was women aged 16 to 40 years old with body deformity symptoms and living in Shiraz city. Sampling method in this research was purposive sampling and a total of 30 people referred to the clinic according to the research objectives, and among them Five people were selected based on the criteria. Clients underwent desensitization and reprocessing through eye movement during 10 sessions of 90 minutes. Research participants responded to the scale of body dysmorphic disorder (1997), sensitivity to appearance-based rejection (2007), body shame (2014), and self-compassion (2011) questionnaire in the baseline situations, intervention sessions, one and three months after the intervention. Data analysis was done using the method of visual analysis of graph, recovery percentage and effect size. The results showed that treatment of eye movement desensitization and reprocessing is significantly effective in reducing symptoms of body dysmorphic disorder, sensitivity to appearance-based rejection, body shame and increasing self-compassion. And the above results can be used to improve the performance and quality of life of affected people with body dysmorphic disorder.
