Abstract

Background: Borderline personality disorder is one of the most chronic, serious, and challenging mental disorders characterized by core symptoms such as emotional instability, impulsivity, identity disorder, problematic interpersonal relationships, and self-injurious behaviors. Cognitive flexibility, impulsivity, interpersonal challenge are important symptoms of this disorder. Aim: The aim of this research is to investigate the effectiveness of correcting cognitive biases of students with symptoms of borderline personality disorder on cognitive flexibility and impulsivity and interpersonal challenge. Methodology: The statistical population of this research included all students of the Persian Gulf University in the academic year 1401-1402 with symptoms of borderline personality disorder, 478 male and female students were selected by cluster sampling based on the borderline personality disorder scale, of which 92 subjects were selected based on the cut-off point. 35 and above were selected as a purposeful sampling, and finally 40 subjects entered the second stage of the research based on the entry criteria. The tools used included cognitive flexibility questionnaire, impulsivity, interpersonal challenge and cognitive bias assessment test. Conclusions: The results related to the first hypothesis showed that the correction of cognitive biases of students with symptoms of borderline personality disorder has a significant difference and a positive effect on cognitive flexibility. The results related to the second hypothesis showed that the correction of cognitive biases of students with symptoms of borderline personality disorder has a significant difference and a positive effect on impulsivity. The results related to the third hypothesis showed that correcting the cognitive biases of students with symptoms of borderline personality disorder on interpersonal problems has a significant difference and a positive effect.
