Abstract

Along with the Arab world literature, the Kuwaiti novel is on the path of progress and has been able to stand among the salient literary works. Among the Kuwaiti novelists, Saud Al-Sanusi is a distinguished author who is well-known for the ‘subjects’ of his novels. In the present study, the researcher tries to analyze and discuss the narrative structure of Al-Sanusi's novels using a descriptive-analytical method. Furthermore, the implications hidden in the used techniques of time, state, focus and liminal components will be addressed based on Genette's theory. According to the findings of this paper, the use of time shifts indicates the dialectic of imitation, modernity and the crisis in Arab societies. Also, the pauses and descriptions used in his novels reveal some mental and psychological aspects of the characters and what the main character suffers from, such as identity, racism, sectarianism, and despair. The congruent frequency due to a narrative importance, centrality or purpose displays the author's determination to deepen the novel’s incident and consolidate it in the minds of the audience. In addition, it gives the text a musical imperative. Form is also examined through the two concepts of space and point of view; the narrative forms of Al-Sanusi’s works are diverse; sometimes the narrator is omniscient, sometimes the narrator is the speaking I or the third person who is not aware of all matters and only narrates the story through the lens of a camera. As for the textual thresholds, perhaps the most outstanding finding is that the different thresholds of Al-Sanusi's novels reproduce their main theme in the form of a shortened linguistic sign or an idea. These thresholds, especially the cover and the topographic image on it, clarify some aspects and inspirations of the novel and is an essential element in enriching the meaning; Hence, it is imperative to understand the liminal features of a text.
