Abstract

Background: Water crisis is one of the main threats to sustainable social and economic development, especially in arid regions. Dashtestan County is one of the important agricultural regions of Bushehr Province and is facing serious water crisis issues. Despite significant developments in the water resources sector, groundwater is the most important source of water in the agricultural sector. Most farmers in Dashtestan County use groundwater resources to irrigate their lands, and this increase in demand for groundwater causes more wells to be dug. It can be said that most wells are dug illegally, which causes groundwater tables to drop significantly and many wells to dry up. In order to address the shortage and water crisis, farmers resort to groundwater extraction, which causes water to become saline, and after a short time, the soil also becomes saline, and this challenge causes the soil to require more water. These things cause the loss of fresh water and also destroy groundwater aquifers, and the continuation of this trend naturally increases energy consumption. Also, in recent years, we have been faced with a huge challenge in terms of sustainable energy consumption, in which we must pay special attention to fossil fuel reserves, the environment, and the sustainability of energy and water resources.Data collected from the regional water department for the 6-month period from 2004 to 2023 were estimated using econometric statistical methods. First, the Falcon Mark index was calculated. According to this index, the number obtained was estimated to be 483, which means that less than 500 cubic meters is in a severe water crisis. Then, the effect of the water crisis on the energy consumption of the agricultural sector was examined, and diagnostic tests were conducted to examine this effect and the relationship between the water crisis and energy consumption in the agricultural sector of Dashtestan County. Then, the VAR model and Granger causality were estimated. Obj
