چکیده

Using wind power had been attention for a long time. In the history of the shipbuilding, we see vessels that wind power have been the main driving force. Nowadays, the growing cost of fossil fuels and creating environmental pollution caused the naval architectures to pay attentions to the use of free, unlimited and clean energy of wind. Using wind power can significantly reduce the current cost of shipping. It might be thought that the ship is always moved in the direction of the wind, but the impression is not correct. Along the path of a ship less happening to the wind direction is always in line with the destination of ship. In actuality, a sailboat cannot travel directly into the wind but employs sailing technique known a “tacking,” to zigzag across a headwind. In this paper, the performance of sailing ships, their driving mechanism, the aerodynamics and hydrodynamics, aerodynamics sail, sail on separation phenomenon, and how to determine the maximum forward speed has been studied. The wind rose of Bushehr province, monthly wind power density, the probability density of the wind speeds has been investigated.
