Abstract

The water-energy-food nexus (WEFN) is a key framework for developing agricultural societies and managing the complex interactions that significantly impact agricultural progress. However, challenges remain, including a lack of comprehensive understanding and knowledge gaps about the key components of this nexus, which can impede effective decision-making and policy formulation in the agricultural sector. This chapter addresses these challenges by thoroughly identifying and analyzing the essential elements of the WEFN in agricultural development. Using a qualitative content analysis method, which included manual analysis and Sankey 5.1 software, the study reviewed 295 relevant articles published in international journals from 2013 to 2023, ultimately selecting 110 for detailed examinations. The findings highlight that the concepts within the WEFN are crucial for shaping agricultural community development. These concepts were organized into three main themes, 29 subthemes, and 384 distinct concepts. The primary themes include the water, energy, and food nexus, with the most frequently researched subthemes being water consumption, energy consumption and fuel, and food production. By identifying these key concepts, the research offers valuable insights for planners and policymakers, enabling the development of practical solutions and strategies tailored to the evolving needs of agricultural communities. The study’s policy recommendations include integrated resource management, promoting renewable energy to reduce reliance on fossil fuels, adopting sustainable agricultural practices to improve water and energy efficiency, and implementing community engagement and education initiatives to enhance stakeholders’ understanding of the nexus. These recommendations aim to support informed policy assessment and evaluation, ultimately fostering sustainable development in agricultural societies.
