Abstract

Background: Drought as one of the most common environmental factors causes various morphological and biochemical changes in plants. Strawberry is a plant sensitive to drought stress that in case of lack of soil moisture, it's vegetative and reproductive yield decreases, so the use of inputs that can have a positive effect on yield by maintaining water in drought conditions is of great importance. Biochar is a porous and carbon-rich material whose structure is capable of storing water and nutrients. Therefore, it is considered as a protection against drought, especially in sandy soils. Aim: The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of biochar levels of palm and cattle manure residues as soil organic modifiers on quantitative and qualitative traits of strawberries (Parus cultivar) under low irrigation stress in the greenhouse of the Faculty of Agriculture and Natural Resources of the Persian Gulf. Methodology: The experiment was performed as a factorial experiment in a completely randomized design with 3 replications. Factors included four different levels of palm residue and cow manure biochar (control, 0.5, 1.5 and 2.5% by weight) and three moisture levels (85, 65 and 45% of field capacity moisture). During the reproductive stage morphological traits including fresh and dry weight of shoots and roots, root length, plant height, greenness index and number of flowers, leaves and buds, the amount of Biochemical factors including relative leaf water content, ion leakage, chlorophyll a, chlorophyll b, carotenoids and the amount of phosphorus, potassium, calcium, magnesium and sodium in the shoot were examined. Conclusions: The results of analysis of variance showed that the simple effect of biochar and drought stress were significant for all traits at the level of 1% probability. Besides, the interaction effect of biochar and drought stress was significant for all traits except for plant height, relative leaf water content and calcium element. By comparing the
