This study describes our findings on a novel and cheap CuI catalytic system under ligand- and solvent-free conditions for the efficient oxidative coupling of aldehydes and alcohols in the presence of sodium cyanide under air. A variety of aldehydes tolerated the reaction conditions and structurally different alcohols were used efficiently. The corresponding esters were obtained in good to excellent yield at atmospheric pressure. Also according to this protocol, phenol esters were obtained in excellent yields at 120 oC.In the next part of this study, Cu-catalyzed direct coupling reaction of aldehydes with thiols for preparation of thioesters under solvent-free conditions is reported.
