Abstract

The aim of this study was to investigate the modification of cognitive bias towards the signs of smoking on risky decision making and inhibitory control in smokers. The present study was conducted in an Semi-experimental manner using a pretest-posttest design with a control group. The statistical population of the study included smoking employees working in government offices in Bushehr in 2020. The research sample consisted of 40 employees who were divided into two experimental and control groups of 20 people using random assignment method. The members of the experimental group participated in an 8-week program of cognitive bias modification for smoking signs. Data were collected using balloon risk test, inhibitory control questionnaire and point exploration task software in two stages before and after the intervention. Analysis of covariance was used to analyze the data. The results showed that the intervention focused on modifying cognitive bias toward smoking signs significantly reduced risky decisions and increased inhibitory control (p<0.01) in the experimental group compared to the control group. Considering the effective role of cognitive bias modification intervention in reducing risky decision-making as well as increasing inhibitory control, it can be used to reduce cognitive and emotional problems in smokers.
