Abstract

Intracellular pathogens are responsible for life-threatening diseases, including tuberculosis, meningitis, AIDS, and various nosocomial infections, which pose a significant burden to the global medical community. The treatment of such infections requires innovative approaches that can efficiently target these pathogens within the cells. Nanoformulations possess a significant role in combating intracellular pathogens, particularly lipid-based nanomedicines have garnered special attention as a promising strategy for treating infections caused by intracellular pathogens. This chapter emphasizes that lipid nanoparticles, such as liposomes, nanoemulsions, nanostructured lipid carriers, solid lipid nanoparticles, and lipid-polymer hybrid nanoparticles, offer several advantages in overcoming these obstacles due to their biocompatibility, ability to encapsulate both hydrophilic and hydrophobic drugs, and capability to deliver drugs directly to intracellular sites. This targeted drug delivery can be particularly beneficial for combating intracellular pathogens that are difficult to treat. However, challenges related to the stability, scalability, and regulatory approval of lipid-based nanomedicines still exist. Despite these obstacles, lipid nanoparticles represent a highly promising area of research, with the potential to revolutionize the treatment of intracellular infections. Combination therapies, such as using lipid nanoparticles in conjunction with immunotherapies or traditional antibiotics, may help combat drug-resistant organisms and enhance treatment outcomes in real-world scenarios.
