Abstract

"Semiology" is simply a science that deals with the study of signs, including the recognition of religious symbols. Because during the Safavid period, metalwork was very important and had cultural, artistic and religious value in material and spiritual dimensions, the present research aims to investigate the semiotics of religious symbols in metalwork of the Safavid period, and answered the question of which religious symbols in the motifs ( geometric and imaginary) were used in Safavid metalwork? The research method is "descriptive-analytical" and data collection has been done using documentary sources, observation and interview. The results of the research indicate that the most important symbols in the motifs (geometric and imaginary) were the symbols of the sun, dragon, Simorgh, symbolic inscriptions and Qazlbash's hat. Many symbols have lost their previous meanings and contain prayer, praise, literary or Quranic themes, and one of their common features is the Shiite slogan and mentioning the blessed names of the infallible imams or Quranic verses. Therefore, the mentioned works have a task other than conveying the message to the audience, and that is conveying the religious message and making the appearance and spirit of the works religious.
