Abstract

The use of photocatalysts to remove contaminants has received more attention in recent years than other methods due to its unique properties. Carbon nitride graphite (g-C3N4) is one of the most up-to-date and efficient types of environmentally friendly photocatalysts, which due to its unique properties especially in the field of wastewater treatment as one of the most environmental problems, has received significant consideration. It should be noted that the use of novel compounds in the removal of environmental pollutants, without considering the evaluation of their life cycle and the study of its effects and consequences on various elements of the environment, is not consistent with the attitude of sustainable development and this point highlights the need for performing such studies. Today, Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) is a comprehensive tool for collecting and analyzing the potential environmental inputs, outputs, and consequences of producing a product or commodity. Therefore, because of the comprehensiveness of LCA, today, this method is considered as an important decision-making tool in environmental management. In the present study, for the first time, LCA analysis was performed for the g-C3N4 photocatalyst used to desulfurize industrial effluents in the South Pars region on the shores of the Persian Gulf. In this case, the aggregated impacts resulted in the g-C3N4 was identified and determined which of the components of the photocatalyst had the largest share of destructive effects on the environment and as far as possible, the optimization solutions were presented. In this study, for the synthesis of g-C3N4, the low-cost substance urea was used, considering the possibility of use and large-scale synthesis. SimaPro software (v.9) was used for the LCA analysis and the Ecoinvent database (v.3.4) was evaluated for life cycle consequences. For this purpose, the necessary inventory was assembled based on laboratory studies and performing various analysis in multi
