Abstract

Background: In this study, pyrazole and enaminone derivatives have been thiocyanated by potassium thiocyanate and hexachloroethane in the presence of copper(I) iodide catalyst. In previous studies conducted by Abbasi and et al. the thiocyanation of indoles and phenols has been effectively reported using the method used in this study. In this study, aromatic compounds such as pyrazoles and non-aromatic compounds containing acidic hydrogen such as enaminones were studied by using the aforementioned method. Objective: Thiocyanation of pyrazoles and enaminones in the presence of copper(I) iodide catalyst by potassium thiocyanate (KSCN) and hexachloroethane (C2Cl6). Methodology: To synthesize pyrazole derivatives, a mixture of phenylhydrazine hydrochloride salt with a 1,3-diketone compound was heated at 100 oC for 17 hours. After the formation of pyrazole, potassium thiocyanate, copper(I) iodide, hexachloroethane, and dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) solvent were added to the reaction mixture and the reaction temperature was increased to 120 oC to obtain thiocyanated pyrazole. The temperature of 80 oC was used to thiocyanate enaminones. Findings: Pyrazoles and enaminones were effectively converted to their respective thiocyanated derivatives using inexpensive and readily available materials such as potassium thiocyanate, copper(I) iodide, and hexachloroethane. Conclusion: We developed an easy, efficient, fast, and one-pot method for thiocyanating pyrazoles and enaminones using inexpensive and readily available materials such as potassium thiocyanate, copper(I) iodide, and hexachloroethane.
