Energy efficiency and energy intensity indices are conventional methods for measuring energy efficiency that consider energy as a single input in producing output while other inputs are neglected. in order to overcome the disadvantages of conventional energy efficiency A new index named total factor energy efficiency (TFEE) developed by Hu and Wang that emphasize the substitution effects between energy and other inputs. This study measured the total factor energy efficiency of Iranian petroleum refineries using the stochastic frontier analysis model during the years of 2006 to 2014. The results show that oil refineries in Iran have the highest amount of energy efficiency in 2012, equal to 99 percent, and have the lowest amount of energy efficiency in 2009 (91%).
