Abstract

The increasing consumption of fossil fuels and serious environmental pollution accelerate the development of renewable alternative fuels. Hydrothermal liquefaction (HTL) is considered a promising technology for biofuel production from biomass. Kinetic model can play a critical role in the optimization and control of the HTL reactor by minimizing the formation of undesired byproducts, increasing product quality, and guidance in the productivity of biocrude. This research aims to evaluate global reaction kinetic modelling of HTL from high-lipid biomass. MATLAB was performed to solve the system of ordinary differential equations and calculate the optimum values for Arrhenius kinetic parameters. The results showed that the global kinetic model provides a good description of the experimental data. Activation energies were calculated at 44.98, 59.55, and 69.98kJ/mol for the conversion of lipids, proteins, and carbohydrates to bio-oil, respectively. Moreover, the model predicted that bio-oil yields as high as 59.74wt% were achievable at 500K in 90min.
