Abstract

The issue of fault location in mean voltage (MV) electricity distribution networks is a great challenge in recent years. Challenges such as the existence of information at the beginning of the feeder along with the widespread and scattered distribution networks, makes fault location of this class of distribution networks a difficult task. Particular difficulties together with the main and subdivision branches in these networks cause serious problems for the variety of presented approaches in this field, which motivated strives to research and invent a smart and efficient way for fault location in mean voltage distribution networks. In this paper, a new fault location method is introduced for mean voltage distribution networks, using transient frequency analysis. The transient caused by fault in the network is analyzed. The main idea of fault location is to determine and measure the analysis index. The fault locating is done through the relationship between the proposed analysis index and different sections in the distribution feeder. In order to evaluate and analyze the proposed method, at first a standard 11 nodes IEEE network is simulated and tested in MATLAB software, then the same procedure is repeated for a real 69 nodes network. Results and calculation showed desirable function and verified the proposed method.
