Abstract

Background: today, composite structures are being used widely in different industries. Sandwich composite structures are the flagships of the composite structures which are used widely in the aerospace, marine, transportation, and civil industries.in this research, two types of composite material joints including scarf joint and double strap joint of a hypothetical marine structure are investigated. Investigation and comparison of this joint will be performed by using of finite element methods in Ansys Workbench software. Aim: the aim of this study is to investigate the benefits and disadvantages of the scarf joint and double strap joint by suing of finite element methods with this hope that the results of this study be used in the design and manufacturing of the composite marine structures. Methodology: the utilized method of the defined problem in this study is the use of finite element method and Ansys software. First, the literature of this study will be reviewed and the defined problem will be solved by reviewing the literature of this work. Conclusions: by doing this study, complete information about composites structures, different composite structures, application of composite structures, and different types of composite structure joints will be achieved. The most important outcome of this study is the investigation and comparison of the scarf joint and double strap joint by using of finite element methods in such a way that the results of this study could be used in design and manufacturing of the marine composite structure joints. Findings: in this study, two type of composite joints including scarf joint and double strap joint are investigated. According to the findings of this study, due to better mechanical properties of the glue with respect to the foam core, strength and the stiffness of the beams with joints are better than the simple beam. Also, among the cases in this study, double strap joint reveal best mechanical properties. Also, change of the
