Abstract

Applying RAPs system has recently been developed in the field of civil engineering, because of the technical and economic advantages it has to consolidate soft soils. Having these advantages is the main motivation to extend researches in this field during the last two decades. Setting up RAPs under the shallow footings increases up strength parameters, lateral stresses of surrounding soil around the piers because of sandy materials aggregation and raises up the consolidation degree because of the high permeability these materials have. Therefore, applying RAPs in saturated clay soils could be a proper option to decrease consolidation settlements. In this study, the possibility of establishing short buildings on the soft thick saturated clay layers and also improving soil using RAPs to control footing settlement has been case-studied and evaluated in a 530 ha project site in Bushehr, Iran. Meanwhile, the effects of diameter, length and separating distance between piers on the settlement decrease and loading capacity increase have been studied, too. In this work, such investigations as modeling, numerical analyses using Plaxis 3D and comparing numerical results with theoretical analytic results in an urban property have been performed. Technical characteristics used in these analyses are based on the results obtained from geotechnics records prepared for this urban property. According to the results for a given width of footing spread, the stiffness modulus and loading capacity increase as the piers length and diameter increase and the separating distance between piers decreases and also in pay attention to decrease the rate of footing settlement of 17.30 cm without of piers implementation to 7.20 cm instate piers implementation with four meters’ length, settlement can decrease to 58.40 percent. It's also possible to establish two floor buildings with limited width, provided improving soil using RAPs.
