3D printing is emerging as an enabling technology for a wide range of new applications. In this review, we focus on the latest development of novel materials and their applications in the field of 3D printing. Five types of advanced materials will be discussed including smart materials, ceramics materials, electronics materials, biomaterials and composite materials. The basic requirements of these materials and their critical challenges as well as the new opportunity of 3D printing will be discussed
