Abstract
The city of Shushtar is located in Khuzestan province and was the center of this province from the Safavid to the Pahlavi era. Many scientists and intellectuals have emerged from this city, which indicates the scientific status of this city. With the spread of Western civilization in Iran, the education system gradually underwent a fundamental transformation in the late Qajar era. Despite this transformation, the process of establishing modern schools in Shushtar progressed very slowly. As a result, by 1931, only one modern school had been built in this city. With the establishment of the Pahlavi government, modern schools expanded greatly in this city. The main question of this research is what are the main grounds and factors for the development of modern schools in Shushtar during the Pahlavi era? It seems that Pahlavi cultural measures, improving the level of security and health, especially during the reign of Reza Shah and Mohammad Reza Shah, the people's demand for the government to build new schools, the establishment of the Knowledge Corps, the presence of new teachers in villages, and the increase in the number of teachers in urban areas, caused this increase. The findings of this research indicate that modern schools flourished in Shushtar during the Pahlavi period. This research has been compiled using library resources, documents, and oral sources, and a descriptive-analytical approach.
