Abstract
The importance of the social perspective on literature lies in enhancing awareness and culture in society. Through this study, we have attempted to shed light on the types of social phenomena present in the novel “The Dragonfly and the Fragrant Perfume” by the Lebanese writer Ibrahim Fadlallah and explain them as much as possible. The important question we will answer in this research is: How were social phenomena manifested in this novel? The results revealed that the novelist addressed social issues and demonstrated the extent to which unity and social cooperation influence the achievement of the intended goal. He also touched upon social life, in addition to the main aspect, which is popular resistance. Through his narrative, Fadlallah depicts various dimensions of social life in an imaginary village, a village that represents an entire society. In addition to the social aspect, “The Dragonfly and the Fragrant Perfume” encompasses other themes, including resistance, steadfastness, and victory, albeit in a symbolic form. The author, Fadlallah, paints a wonderful picture of the popular resistance taking place in the village, which can be summarized as follows: The novel begins by explaining the encroachments of the company guaranteeing the villagers’ lands and the squandering of their rights. The villagers begin to consider finding a solution to confront the aggressors. Based on this, we will address the social phenomena in this novel using the descriptive-analytical approach.
