Abstract Nearly, all of William Shakespeare's plays are about love and in one way or another present the difficulties that arise by the characters' falling in or out of love. Of all Shakespeare's plays, the comedies are more direct in their presentation of love and the characters, who are the prototypes of the Renaissance or the Elizabethan period, seemingly know what they mean by love. The values of love have already been established by men and young couples marry according to their class, wealth, and education. In their patriarchal society, men arrange marriages without requiring women's opinions. The present study will analyse the female protagonists of three of Shakespeare's love comedies from a feministic perspective to demonstrate the roles played by them in their patriarchal societies.
