hOne of the interesting properties of the algae as marine great source, is their antioxidant properties that comes from existence of many organic chemical substances like polyphenols. These chemical substances are influenced by types of different spacies algae and ecology and ecosystem. There are some methods for investigation of antioxidant capacity but often take a lot of time and cost, in addition there is some difficulty in condition and treatment. Among these experimental methods, electrochemical methods, especially voltammetry, could be used as a useful, simple and inexpensive fast screening method to investigate antioxidant capacity. In this work antioxidant properties of nine spacies algae of Persian Gulf coast (Bushehr region) have been investigated using cyclic voltammetry method.
This method is carried out based on the relationship of the voltammogram anodic current of algae extract with the antioxidant capacity of polyphenol substances of algae.
The cyclic voltammograms are obtained for methanol extract in four different conditions, including filtered and unfiltered extract which are placed in both sun light and darkness. The results show that between nine investigated spacies algae, Champia sp ,Laurencia sp and Cystoseira sp have the most antioxidant capacity. In Addition, the study of matrix and light effect on the stability of antioxidant property of algae indicate a significant difference between algae which is dependent of antioxidant capacity. Finally, the electrochemical results were compared with 1,1-Diphenyl-2-picryl-hydrazyl method.
