Abstract Micro cellulose was extracted from palm tree waste and characterized by XRD, FESEM and FTIR techniques. As prepared micro cellulose was used for synthesis of a chitosan hydrogen with Terephthaldehyde cross links (CTCG). Another chitosan hydrogel with Terephthaldehyde cross links without using of cellulose (CTG) was also synthesized. Both hydrogels were characterized by FESEM and FTIR methods. The ability of these hydrogels as adsorbents of Bromocresol green, methylene blue and Indigo carmine dyes from aqueous solutions at three different pH was studied and it was shown that CTCG was a better adsorbent for all three dyes. An Ag containing hydrogel (CTCG-Ag) was also synthesized using CTCG, AgNO3 and NaBH4 reducing agent and characterized by XRD method. XRD results showed the existence of Ag nanoparticles of 20.5 nm size. The ability of these three hydrogels for water absorption was investigated and the results showed that CTCG was a better absorbent of water than the other two hydrogels.
