Abstract

The study of title as a new phenomenon has emerged in recent years in criticism. It is one of the most important matters dealt with by modern criticism in the field of linguistic and semiotic theories. The title in the fields of critical studies, has been a principal and non-marginal theme in which many of researchers have gone into. Hence, the author should pay special attention to the title as a textual threshold and a common point between addressee and text. Therefore, the importance of the title in the atmosphere of the text and its role in transmitting the purposes of the text to the addressee become clear. In order to clarify this importance and reveal the unknown in the title and to decode the complexity of the titles, we made use of the views of the semiotic approach. In order to highlight the Selected titles of Iraqi poet, ??li? ??’?, entitled Nawb?t Sh’riya, we appied those views to the titles of his chosen poems. Applying the descriptive-analytical method and using the semiotic approach, the aim of this study is to discover the extent of influence of these titles on the reader. We studied signs and hidden inspirations in the titles and clarified the poet’s motives in selecting the titles of poems. At the end of this research, we came to following conclusions: National Signifiance are among the most prominent in the titles, we also noticed the convergence of political and national themes so that those indicate the poet engagement with these matters, the titles are more nominal than the rest of the titles and symbolize permanence. The phrases used by the poet to entitle his poems are only the second form of his homeland and a mirror that reflects what he experiences or more exactly what his homeland experiences.
