Abstract
|
Gravel impact compaction piers are one of the effective methods for improvement of loose soils especially in coastal areas, which are used to reduce settlement, increase bearing capacity and reaction modulus of soil bedding and soil retrofit against liquefaction. This paper presents simple solutions for predicting dry density and void ratio of soil as two indexes of soil density after soil improvement by using gravel impact compaction piers. During researches, diameter and optimal distance between the piers in the square arrangement have been obtained in order to soil retrofit against liquefaction and relying on density properties of the piers. A case study was also carried out to evaluate influence of compaction piers properties on soil density around the piers, stresses occurring inside the soil and condition of liquefaction quantitatively in the Rig port of Bushehr Province. The results show that the square arrangement of gravel compaction piers, on average, increased dry density of soil by 9 percent, and decreased void ratio by 18 percent. Also, the soil's safety factor against liquefaction has been increased to the required extent by simply relying on density properties of the piers and without sharing their drainage property.
