Several studies have reported that patients with Multiple sclerosis (MS) have an increased risk of developing schizophrenia (SCZ). A few studies suggested that MS and SCZ have similar etiologies. Some risk factors including gender, ethnicity, geography and season have an influence on the occurrence of both MS and SCZ. This paper aims to examine the differences and similarities in blood expression profile of SCZ and MS. The gene expression datasets of GSE19112 (patients with SCZ) and GSE21942 (patients with MS) were utilized in bioinformatics analysis. The analysis was carried out by GEO2R. The adjusted P value 0.05 and log fold change (FC)?>?2.0 or log FC???2.0 were used as the cut-off criteria. Venn diagram was drawn to find common and specific differentially expressed genes. Gene ontology enrichment analysis was performed on target gene list by submitting to PANTHER (http://pantherdb.org/). 30 and 82 differentially expressed genes were found in MS and SCZ respectively. Gene ontology and pathway enrichment analysis showed that different pathways involved in MS gene dysregulation including ? adrenergic, cortocotropin and gonadotropin signaling pathways. Also, different pathways involved in SCZ gene dysregulation such as Wnt and ? adrenergic pathways. Although no common differentially expressed gene was found between the two diseases, ? adrenergic pathway was common between both conditions. Taken together, ? adrenergic pathway provide a new perspective for similar etiologies of MS and SCZ.
