Abstract The fiber-reinforced soils can be used as embankment behind retaining walls. in this study, stress characteristics method is used to calculate the lateral pressure of fiber-reinforced soils wall in active and passive states. Fibers distribution in soil is considered to be anisotropic. The employed failure criterion considers the mixture of soil and fiber homogenous and anisotropic and neglects the fibers splitting. The embankment behind the wall is considered grained and inadhesive. Stress equilibrium equations on slip lines are solved using finite difference method by satisfying boundary conditions of ground level and mentioned wall. A computer program has been written to solve the problem. Using the properties of soil and fibers and boundary conditions as inputs, the program can solve the net and calculate the stress distribution along the retaining wall. The lateral pressure coefficient can be obtained by integrating this pressure. The obtained pressure coefficient by this method is well-correlated with the obtained pressure coefficient by limit analysis method. With several parametric analysis, the effects of soil and fiber properties and also the angle between the wall and ground level on the lateral pressure of soil is evaluated. The special isotropic case in which the fibers are randomly distributed in soil is also investigated. For the active state, the influence of fiber concentration in both isotropic and anisotropic cases in comparison with other parameters is more. However in the passive state, variation of ground angle in isotropic case and variation of wall roughness in anisotropic case make it more critical.
