Present study aimed to find how Iranian EFL writing raters perceive the construct of writing as they rate essays. For this aim, a body of 15 experienced raters was asked to think-aloud their thoughts while rating essays. Findings revealed that raters mostly considered mechanical and grammatical aspects of writing. The study warns that such a limited conception of writing construct demands considerable care in a time local criteria are encouraged.
