Abstract

Culverts are structures sitting within roads for their functionality in transferring water across. Upon leaving these structures, the flow impacts the downstream bed with the potential to erode it and cause structure failure. Different methods are used in order to prevent failure at a culvert's downstream area. One of them is installation of aprons at the downstream side of the culvert. With the apron placed downstream of the culvert, the outflowing jet from the culvert first has an impact with the apron, which can lead to dissipation of the energy of the flow leaving the culvert. Under flooding conditions, the culvert's outflow on sloped paths could have a higher velocity than that on paths without any slopes and this increase in flow velocity could develop scouring on the culvert's downstream path. Development of scour downstream of the culvert and negligence of such an issue could lead to structure failure. It is therefore highly important to investigate the effect of culvert slope on scour pattern variations downstream of this structure as well. The water height inside the culvert also changes under flooding conditions and this change could alter the outflow velocity. Increase in the outflow velocity changes the scour depth. Hence, evaluation of the effect of culvert submergence is also of great importance. In addition, the flooding intensity varies for different durations. Accordingly, changing the flooding duration could also have an influence on the scour pattern downstream of the culvert and is among the topics requiring investigation. As mentioned above, culverts are in charge of transferring water from one side of the road to the other side. Occasionally, there is a height difference between the road sides, which causes the culvert's outflowing jet to impact the downstream bed from different heights and change the scouring. Hence, the effect of bed level and culvert's outflowing jet height was also investigated in this study. This study explored the effect
