Objective: The aim of this study was to review anti-cancer compounds of marine
resources and their use in the treatment area. Millions of people suffer from cancer, which
is one of the main causes of death in developed countries Efforts on secondary metabolites
from marine organisms have been satisfactory and some marine originated drugs approved
by the FDA in the field of cancer Understanding how genetic and biochemical level
synthesis of these compounds led to the discovery of new drugs with anticancer potential. Methods: Many anti-cancer compounds from marine sources are in clinical stages
and some of them are also approved. Bryostatin is a marine macrolide that isolated from
bryozoa Bugula neritina and selectively destroys cancer cells, unlike common
chemotherapy drugs in the body, stimulates blood. Soblidotin derivatives of Dolastatin 10
and Synthadotin derivatives of Dolastatin 15 which inhibits tubulin polymerization, then
prevent cell division and is effective in solid tumors. These compounds have the least side
effects and are used for lung as well as prostate cancer .Kahalalide F was isolated from the
mollusca Elysia rufescens and disrupt the lysosomal membranes of tumor cells and for
tumor cells, such as prostate which have a high lysosomal activities are effective and less
sensitive to non-tumor cell lines. Aplidine is a cyclic depsipeptide, isolated from Aplidium
albicans and prevents cell division by inhibiting protein synthesis and secretion of VEGF
and prevents the angiogenesis process. Jasplakinolide is depsipeptide that isolated from
sponge Jaspis sp. and prevents cell division by interfering with the polymerization of actin.
Ecteinascidin (ET-743) is an alkaloid isolated from tunicate Ectenaiscidia trubinata which
blocks DNA binding of the oncogenic transcription factor FUS-CHOP, therefore promotes
differentiation and reverses the oncogenic phenotype in these cells.
