Settlement in soil can be happen by change in soil structure or by gradual expulsion of water from the voids because of static or dynamic loadings. Observation of the soil behavior especially settlement, demonstrate that soil behavior has an uncertain and statistical nature because of many effective parameters.
In this study, a three dimensional finite element method by statistical viewpoint has been used for reliability assessment of settlement of square and rectangular foundations under static loading. Behavior of soil has been modeled by a numerical elasto-plastic model. Soil parameters such as Young’s modulus, Poisson’s ratio, cohesion and friction angel were selected as stochastic parameters. After validation of codded program by MATLAB, the probability of settlement was assessed by probability density function of settlement at different depths. It was shown that reliability index for square foundations is larger than reliability index for rectangular foundations. Also, the probability of failure easily can be estimated by using cumulative probability function of failure.
